Winter in Toronto can be very harsh and long, and this winter certainly seemed to have no end. So it was time to escape from the cold, so we decided to head off on a cheap one-week package deal to Cuba. Of course my intention was all along to turn this package vacation in a travel adventure, and it would be a challenge to see if I could succeed. So on a freezing winter day (February 19, 2009), I got up at 3 am, left the house, picked up my friend and we headed to the airport. After an uneventful flight we arrived in the tropical warmth of Santiago de Cuba. Canadians do not have any travel restrictions going to Cuba, and the low prices of package vacations have made Cuba one of Canada’ favourite winter getaways. With our luggage in tow we embarked on the 1-hour bus ride through the landscape east of Santiago, Cuba’s second largest city, and arrived intact at our resort Carisol Corales. We were famished by the time we got there, and caught the tail end of the buffet. But as many experienced Cuba travellers know, Cuban food, given the shortages in the country, isn’t always something to write home about. We were both somewhat shocked at the quality of the food, but decided to make the best of this one-week adventure that lay ahead. Of course we checked out the hotel property and were surprised to find horses, cows, goats and chickens grazing on the dry grasslands surrounding the hotel buildings.
